Hogshead-Makar

Nancy capped
eight years as a world class swimmer at the 1984 Olympics, where she won more
medals than any other swimmer - three Gold medals and one Silver. She has been
inducted into seven Halls of Fame, including the International Swimming Hall
of Fame. Since retiring from swimming, Hogshead-Makar has been a high profile
advocate of gender equity in sports. She is one of the nations foremost exponents
of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, particularly within the context
of intercollegiate sports. In private practice at Holland & Knight LLP,
she represented student-athletes and universities in Title IX matters with the
primary goal of achieving legal compliance without litigation. She is a former
President of the Women's Sports Foundation (1992-94) and currently serves on
its Board of Stewards. She has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic
of gender equity in athletics and has served on two Presidential Committees.
She has been a frequent guest on national news programs on the topic of sports
and gender equity. Today Nancy is an Assistant Professor of Law at the Florida
Coastal School of Law, where she teaches torts and sports law. In addition to
her teaching duties at Florida Coastal, Professor Hogshead-Makar is the founding
director of a legal advocacy center for women in sports. The center focuses
on legal issues surrounding athletic opportunities at high schools and colleges,
equal pay for female coaches, and sexual harassment within athletic
departments. In recognition of her contributions to women in sports, Nancy was
inducted into the Hall of Fame for the National Association for Sports and Physical
Education (NASPE) in 1993 and the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame
in June, 2001. Additionally, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree from
Springfield College in May, 2002. Professor Hogshead-Makar earned her law degree
from Georgetown University Law Center and is she is an honors graduate of Duke
University with majors in political science and women's studies.
